How We Ranked These Exchanges

We evaluated each exchange across five dimensions: trading fees (both spot and withdrawal), fiat currency support and payment methods, availability by jurisdiction, ZEC-specific features (including whether they support shielded withdrawals), and historical security and reliability record.

Shielded withdrawal support is a significant consideration for privacy-conscious ZEC buyers — some exchanges only allow transparent t-address withdrawals, while others support the newer Unified Address (UA) format that enables direct shielded receipts.

#1 Kraken — Best Overall for ZEC

Kraken consistently earns the top position for ZEC trading. With over a decade of operation and zero major hacks, Kraken's security record is exceptional. The ZEC/USD and ZEC/EUR pairs offer tight spreads and excellent liquidity.

Maker fees start at 0.16% and taker fees at 0.26% for standard accounts, dropping to as low as 0.00%/0.10% for high-volume traders. Kraken supports bank transfers (SEPA, wire, ACH), card purchases, and even bank deposits in CAD, AUD, CHF, and JPY — making it truly global.

Kraken supports ZEC withdrawals but currently uses transparent t-address withdrawals only — you will need to shield your ZEC within your own wallet after withdrawal.

#2 Binance — Best for Volume and Low Fees

Binance offers ZEC/USDT and ZEC/BTC with the deepest order book of any exchange — meaning less slippage on larger orders. The standard fee is 0.1% per side, reducible to 0.075% when using BNB for fees. Binance offers a range of ways to buy ZEC with fiat: P2P marketplace, card purchase, and bank transfer depending on your country.

A note for US traders: Binance.US has less ZEC liquidity than global Binance and some features are restricted. Non-US traders should use Binance.com. Binance also has a history of regulatory friction in several jurisdictions — always check your local regulations.

#3 Coinbase — Best for US Beginners

Coinbase is the largest regulated US exchange and the easiest onramp for American newcomers. The Simple interface abstracts away trading complexity. ZEC is available as a straightforward buy on Coinbase, with instant delivery.

The downside is fees — Coinbase charges a spread (typically 0.5%) plus a flat fee for small purchases and up to 2.99% for card buys. Using Coinbase Advanced Trade (formerly Coinbase Pro) reduces fees to 0.4% maker / 0.6% taker for low-volume traders.

Coinbase is FDIC member insured for USD holdings, publicly listed on Nasdaq, and holds money transmitter licences across all US states. For US buyers prioritising regulatory safety, it is the obvious choice.

#4 Gemini — Best for Compliance-Focused US Buyers

Gemini is the most regulated US crypto exchange. It holds a New York BitLicense, is SOC 2 Type 2 certified, and carries insurance on cold storage holdings. ZEC/USD trading is available on Gemini ActiveTrader with fees of 0.35% maker and 0.35% taker (better than standard Gemini at 1.49%).

Gemini is ideal for buyers who want the highest level of regulatory oversight and are primarily US or UK based. The trade-off is slightly less ZEC liquidity than Binance or Kraken.

#5 KuCoin — Best for No-KYC with Higher Limits

KuCoin allows unverified accounts to withdraw up to approximately 5 BTC equivalent per day — significantly higher than most exchanges. This makes it useful for buyers who prefer not to complete full KYC verification. ZEC/USDT is available with 0.1% fees.

KuCoin is not regulated in the traditional sense (it is incorporated in Seychelles) and has faced regulatory action in some countries. Treat it as a trading venue, not a long-term custodian — always withdraw promptly.

A Note on Shielded Withdrawals

As of 2025, most centralised exchanges only allow withdrawals to transparent ZEC addresses (t-addresses). This means the exchange can see your withdrawal address on-chain. For full privacy, after receiving ZEC at your wallet's t-address, you should shield it within your Zcash wallet (Zashi or YWallet) to move it into the shielded pool.

Some exchanges have begun supporting Unified Addresses (UA), which automatically route ZEC to your shielded wallet. Check your specific exchange's withdrawal page for UA support as this feature rolls out gradually.

Bottom line: For most buyers, Kraken offers the best combination of low fees, fiat support, security, and availability. Beginners in the US should start with Coinbase. For large trades, combine exchange purchase with our OTC guide.
